THE CHARACTER;
Series/Fandom: Wild ARMs 4
Character's Name: Scythe Riebauer
Character's Sex: Male
Character's Age: 30
Canon point: After defeating the main cast of WA4, right before his death via plane collision

Abilities: When paired with his space-controlling demon girlfriend Belial, his constant intake of her blood causes him to gain a part of her powers and the ability to manipulate space. However, when he's separated from her, his powers diminish as he uses them until they completely disappear. From this point, I’ll focus on his abilities without her, as it’s very unlikely she’ll end up in Traverse Town or any of the nearby worlds, given the painfully small fandom.

On his own, he has absolutely no special abilities whatsoever. He is able to perform minor magic spells, as a large part of Filgaians can, but they're nowhere near the power he's used to having. He uses no weapons, only magic and space manipulation for offense and defense. He knows a minor amount of hand-to-hand combat, but due to his over-reliance on magic, he's very rusty.

Strengths: He has some amount of basic magic, but it’s fairly weak thanks to a lack of practice using his own energy. He’s physically fit, though not remarkably so, and slightly more durable than the normal person simply due to the prolonged exposure to powerful magic. When he drinks the blood of others he feels energized, but it’s more of a mental stimulation than physical. He also considers it a “strength” that, despite being a vampire-equivalent, he’s able to go out during the day with no ill effects. Of course, this is just because he's a regular old human.

Weaknesses: His pride in his space-manipulation abilities causes him to overestimate his potential, and as they dwindle, this will only get worse and end up in confusion. His powers drain fairly quickly if he doesn’t have access to Belial, as well, so it’s likely they won’t last more than a few days after his arrival. In the end, he’s nothing more than a normal human with a little bit of dinky magic.

Background: Disclaimer: Because Scythe is such a minor character (he’s the first antagonist to die in the game much to my dismay), much of this will be headcanon based on game script, battle mechanics and quotes, supplementary info gleaned from the WA4 complete guide, and my own research. I’ve discussed my headcanons with fellow WA4 fans who’ve helped to fact-check me, but please let me know if I need to clarify/expand on anything and I’ll be glad to do so. Now for the actual background, after some... icecream.

Scythe’s parents died violently during the 78-year war, leaving him an orphan at 12 with an obsession with blood. Forced to become a drifter and thief or starve to death, he roamed the world of Filgaia, drinking his own blood out of curiosity and excitement before he moved on to the blood of others. After hearing the legends of the Crimson Noble race of vampires, he convinced himself this was his true nature. Although he had no particularly special abilities, he lorded his “ancestry” over others, romancing the girls that he could and drinking their blood, good old-fashioned vampire style.

At 18, he met Belial, a demoness disguised as a frail woman, and the two fell in love. When he started to drink her blood, his powers multiplied exponentially, and he believed his true abilities had finally awakened. A fully capable “Crimson Noble,” he used his powers to wreak havoc occasionally, but only to induce fear into others and build up his reputation. At 19, he joined the Congressional Knights’ side in the war, and it didn’t take long for the Knights to figure out that it was much more beneficial to send Belial along with him. He was sent on only a few missions before the war ended about a year later.

When the intelligence unit Brionac was reformed under Captain Lambda Zellweger, Scythe was reassigned to the unit along with his partner, and they started to work in various ways to benefit the Congressional Knights. However, due to the sheer power of each Brionac member (each being equal to a full battalion), he hadn’t been sent on terribly many missions in the past ten years. During his free time, he was nowhere to be seen in the base, only returning for meetings and mission assignments.

Scythe and the rest of the unit were recently given the task to retrieve one young girl with the ability to manipulate ARMs, a powerful type of weapon created during the war. When she and her friends ended up trapped on the airship he was commandeering, they fought, and Scythe cut them down. Although beaten and exhausted, one of the girl’s friends managed to cause the planes on the airship to go haywire and head straight for Scythe. His powers almost completely drained, he attempted to warp away, but to no avail. The planes headed straight for him, he expressed his incredulity...

And ended up in Traverse Town.

Appearance: Scythe has dark tan skin with cream-white hair and red eyes. His canine teeth appear slightly sharp, and there are several tattoos on his body. He wears his personalized Brionac uniform like the rest of the group, but he also wears a laced-up collar and several rings on his fingers. He stands at 178 cm, or about 5 feet 10 inches, with a slightly thin stature.

Personality: Scythe is a playful but proud individual, and enjoys putting himself above others, either through his actions or his so-called Crimson Noble status. Because of his pride, he looks down on nearly all humans, especially belligerent children, but he does respect a few of his teammates in Brionac for their reliability and various other qualities. Deep down, he may realize that he’s simply an uninteresting human, but because he’s content with his position and his partner Belial, he hasn’t particularly worried about these latent issues for the past several years.

He’s often interested in having a good time, and tends to tease others (mostly with the usual “you look tasty” vampire shtick) whether or not he’s on official business. He’s not opposed to pulling the occasional prank, although he would never refer to it as such, thinking the word to be too childish, and enjoys acting as if he has rivalries with his fellow Brionac agents. However, he would never do something that would endanger a mission, his coworkers, or his partner. Although he may act nonchalant about serious matters on the outside, he knows when to act and is an efficient lieutenant who will do what he needs to do to get the job done. He would never allow himself to do poorly and damage his reputation.

He has a code of honor of sorts that he follows, shown when he displays distaste at a Brionac meeting at the fact that his superiors, a bunch of old men on a council, are looking to capture a helpless little girl. He’s something of a ladies’ man (or so he says, at least); he can be very courteous, but he also won’t refuse to fight a woman if the need arises, as he does right before his death. He takes very good care of his lover, Belial, and they’ve created an interesting master-servant charade to their relationship that they enjoy playing out, which works out especially well for Scythe’s ego. Although he’s typically very composed in his own way, the loss of her would distress him greatly in more than one way, and he wouldn’t be able to avoid showing it.

Because of the fake nature of his “Crimson Noble” status and the fact that he witnessed his parents’ death, he has a few insecurities about his mortality, and subverts his fear of death by convincing himself he’s invincible. When confronted with his powerlessness, he’s shocked and confused, as evidenced by the deer-in-headlights look accompanying his last words in the game. After having his fantasies validated for so long, the sudden lack of power would cause him to become immensely frustrated with himself and everything around him.

SAMPLES;
Action/Journal Sample:
[Waking up from his departure from his own world, Scythe is not a happy camper. It takes him a while to adjust to the idea that he’s in a completely unknown place, but he decides to explore in order to find familiar territory as soon as possible.]

I must have been knocked off of the airship somehow by those damn kids... But this isn’t at all like any of the places on Filgaia I’ve been. Where in the world am I?

[He’s conveniently decided to ignore the strange furry talking monsters attempting to explain the situation, simply swatting them away if they get too close.]

How irritating... Captain Lambda won’t be pleased with me when I get back. And oh, Belial, you must be so worried... Please try to hang on for me, won’t you?

[He sighs dramatically, making a spectacle of himself for all around to enjoy. He sure does enjoy talking to himself.]

When I get back I can show those insolent brats not to mess with a Crimson Noble... I just know how much you’ll enjoy that. It will be such a great start to our reunion.

[As he’s passing a cafe, he slows his steps and peers in the window at the sweets on display. An idea comes to him and he smiles slightly before slipping in the door, taking a closer look at what they had to offer.]

Maybe I’ll make it more of a treat for her when we meet again... She has always liked sweets.

[Only paying attention to the number displayed on the price cards, he steps smugly over to the counter and lays his gella on the counter, motioning to one of the cakes.]

I’ve a lady to impress, so put it in something a bit dressed up, won’t you?

[His haughty demeanor doesn’t diminish as he’s told his money isn’t valid here, though his smirk certainly turns into a frown. He’s clearly displeased.]

What do you mean not valid? What sort of backwards place doesn’t accept gella? This is money, you incompetent little cretin!

Giving a triumphant laugh as he landed the finishing blow to his latest target, Scythe stood over the victim with something of a pitying smirk.

“What a shame. I was hoping this would be at least a little bit of a challenge... I guess I’ll just have to have my fun somewhere else,” he sighed, giving a shrug as he knelt down to secure his prisoner. From behind him came applause, a smiling lithe woman sitting nearby the source. He stood up and smiled back to her, his sharp canines clearly visible, and he strode towards her.

“I did quite well, didn’t I?,” he bragged to his partner, sliding onto the fence she was seated on and putting an arm around her. “Though I do enjoy winning, I have to say that my favorite part of every mission is the lovely audience.”

As she leaned closer to him, he brought a hand to her chin, and they shared a gaze of longing before he moved his mouth closer to her neck, whispering near her ear.

“So, don’t you think I deserve a little reward?” the man asked, already anticipating the answer.

“I always do,” Belial replied, a small smile on her face as her lover bit her veins carefully and began to replenish his power through her blood.

After a moment, he leaned back and licked his lips, kissing her briefly on the cheek before standing and motioning for her to follow.

“Let’s head back. The faster we can get the target back to headquarters, the more time we can have to ourselves.”

Have you read the rules & F.A.Q.s? Yes indeed. I'll tell you though, I'd never try paopu fruit, it looks way gross.
